Easy Eggless Chocolate French Toast Recipe

We have been eating lots of French toast since I published my BEST EGGLESS FRENCH TOAST recipe. And since everyone in our home is a chocolate lover, I thought that a chocolate version was highly needed. Please, drumrolls…Meet my Easy Eggless Chocolate French Toast Recipe! This Eggless Chocolate French Toast is super easy to make and will be ready in a flash! Perfect for satisfying those sweet-tooth cravings. Made with the NEW Horizon® Chocolate Protein Milk, this French toast is slightly crisp on the outside and light yet custardy on the inside. It’s like dessert for breakfast! YUM.

Milk: As you know, my daughter has an egg allergy, so I always worry about her protein intake, especially in the mornings. So I decided to use Horizon® Chocolate Protein milk; the milk is deliciously smooth and creamy and has 12 grams of organic, complete dairy protein in every 8 ounces. You can use any milk you prefer. For a dairy-free version, I recommend oat milk. Cocoa Powder: In this recipe, you can use unsweetened natural cocoa powder or Dutch-processed. Cornstarch: You can substitute for potato starch 1:1. Spices: For extra flavor! You’ll need ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg. Sugar: Regular white granulated sugar o caster sugar. Butter: I prefer to use unsalted butter, but if you only have salted butter handy, you can use it. In this case, skip the salt called in the recipe. Bread: Thick slices, approx. 1 inch preferred.

Optional: Sometimes, I like to add nutritional yeast for a rich touch of flavor, and black salt (or kala namak) instead of regular salt. These two extra ingredients will make the perfect combination to substitute the richness and flavor that eggs add to french toast. You can use your bread of choice to make this French toast. If you want to make your own bread, try my Eggless Brioche Bread Recipe! Give the mixture a stir in between dipping the bread. The cornstarch might settle on the bottom, so stirring helps keep it well-mixed. Make sure your skillet is on medium heat and warm before putting the French toast in so you can get the exterior nicely golden. However, if the pan is too hot, you risk burning the bread. If you’re making breakfast for a crowd and have to make multiple batches of French toast, keep them warm in the oven. Simply preheat the oven to 250º F. Then, place a wired rack on a baking sheet and place the fried French toast on the rack; place it in the oven while cooking the remaining bread. It keeps the bread warm and crispy, without drying it out.

After cooking the French toast in the skillet, preheat your oven to broil. Place your oven-safe wire cooling rack directly on top of a sheet pan. Then, place the French toasts over the wire cooling rack. Top each French toast with a big marshmallow. Broil for 2-3 minutes or until the marshmallows are lightly golden and starting to melt. Finally, drizzle with chocolate syrup. Sprinkle with coconut flakes and small marshmallows, if desired. Serve.

Storing, Freezing & Reheating French Toast

STORE: Since this recipe does not have eggs, it lasts a little longer than the traditional egg version. To store French toast, let them cool completely, then wrap them with aluminum foil to retain moisture. Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for 2 months.  FREEZE: To freeze French toast, let them cool completely, then wrap them with aluminum foil to retain moisture. I like to wrap them individually so I can pull them out and just heat however much I want to reheat at a time. Transfer wrapped toasts to a resealable freezer bag. Freeze for 2 months.  REHEAT: Frozen French toast can be reheated directly from the freezer.

OVEN: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and place the frozen French toast on the rack; place in the oven and bake at 350°F for 10 – 15 minutes, flipping once about halfway through baking. MICROWAVE: Reheat the French toasts for 2 minutes on high, but they will not be as crisp coming out of the microwave as they would from the oven.
