Variations

Heat. If you like the heat, you can add red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to your taste. Consistency. If you like it on the thicker side, try adding about 2 to 4 Tablespoons of tomato paste. I’d add 1 Tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is met. The tomato paste will add a bolder flavor, but it tastes just as delicious! Fresh herbs. Use fresh basil, oregano, and minced garlic and onion for a bolder flavor.

Storing & Freezing Instructions

Store: Refrigerate unused sauce for up to a week.

Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

Tomato sauce: Make sure your tomato sauce has no added salt, herbs, or spices. Herbs: Dried oregano and basil. These herbs pack a punch of flavor. You can also add other herbs, such as thyme and rosemary if you want. Seasonings: Garlic powder and onion powder. Salt and black pepper: I prefer kosher salt (or sea salt). If you only have table salt handy, I recommend reducing the amount to half. Sugar: I think a little pinch of sugar enhances the flavor of the tomatoes, but I feel left out for a sugar-free version.

Only One Step…Mix All the Ingredients!

This pizza sauce is ready to be used as soon as it’s mixed — no cooking needed! It literally takes minutes to mix up in a medium bowl. If you only have canned whole tomatoes, you can toss them in your blender or food processor to turn them into a sauce! My favorites are San Marzano tomatoes. This batch makes enough to cover four 12-inch pizzas, depending on how much sauce you add to each pizza. You can use this sauce on pizza, in calzones, or as a dipping sauce for stromboli or mozzarella sticks. Freeze: You can freeze any extra pizza sauce for up to 3 months.
